Neisseria Gonorrhoeae - Genomic Epidemiology in Rhode Island

This was an exciting 5 week project that involved analyzing roughly 35 Gonorrhoeae genomes shared with me through my lab research group. The goal was to build a computational pipeline using Linux command line and high performance computing that cleans, assembles, and builds a phylogenetic tree to better understand the relationship of these genomes within a certain city. By the end of the 5 week project I gave a presentation explaining my methods, findings and next steps. Each sexually transmitted bacterial infection tells a different story, and when we capture the genomic information we can narrow in on the different factors that play a role in transmission and resistance.

This project introduced me to plant genomics and allowed me to expand on my computational biology skill sets, and it was one of the experiences that inspired me to pursue research in bioinformatics/computational biology more seriously.
